The increasing international and national importance as a language of instruction and communication cannot be overemphasized. At the level of basic education in Cameroon, the mastery of English by the pupil enables him or her to grasp with ease the other subjects of the curriculum.

MATHEMATICS

Class 1 - 6

The present mathematics syllabus contains the general objectives, content topics, suggested teaching materials as well as teaching and assessment strategies. Generally, the mathematics syllabus in primary school emphasizes seven critical areas:

HISTORY

Class 4 - 6

History is considered an important subject because its teaching is expected to develop in pupils a spirit of objectivity, curiosity, common destiny, tolerance and liberty. By reflecting on past events, history develops the attitude of criticism and evaluation. It makes possible the understanding of human progress through the ages, by documenting the successes and failures of human beings as members of society and as individuals

GEOGRAPHY

Class 4 - 6

Geography occupies a unique position in the primary school curriculum because it involves te study of aspects of other disciplines. In other words, Geography is the inter disciplinary study in itself. The study of geography should enable the children locate themselves and their country within the global space called the world. They should be able to understand the social, cultural and economic realities of their country, continent and the world as well as human agents in that reality

CITIZENSHIP

Class 1 - 6

Citizenship covers Moral Education, Civics, Human Rights, Democracy, Peace Education and Collective Security (civil defence).  These are issues that have a direct bearing on family life, nation building and world peace.

SCIENCE

Class 1 - 6

Cameroon as a developing nation continues to face numerous challenges in the areas of economic and social development. There is need to ensure better health for all, climate hunger and superstition, conserve natural resources, protect the environment and develop techniques for industrial production to enhance the natural economy. Science teaching in the primary school is expected to lay the foundation of scientific knowledge, attitudes and skills that would enhance the capacity to solve our national development challenges. Bearing in mind these concerns, the syllabus in primary science is designed to incorporate two areas: (1) health education and (2) environmental and science technology

HOME ECONOMICS

Class 3 - 6

Home economics is a key school subject that aims at providing the youth with the knowledge and skills required for effective home management and successful living.  In the past the subject was restricted to girls.  However, current trends in society require that both girls and boys acquire the knowledge and skills taught in home economics.  The present syllabus is designed to cover five areas.  These are (1) food and nutrition, (2) house craft, (3) mother craft (4) needle work and (5)laundry.  The four areas are integrated in the six years syllabus as shown in the table below.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Class 1 - 6

The purpose of education, as is commonly known, is to develop the child mentally, morally and physically. In primary school, physical education is important because it makes a direct contribution to the physical development of the pupils. It is important for physical education to be taken seriously at school so that the all round development of the pupils can be ensured. The programme in physical education in primary school comprises athletics, team sports and other sporting activities as well as cultural and animation activities

NATIONAL CULTURE

Class 1 - 6

The national culture syllabus is designed to cover Drawing, Music and Manual Arts and Crafts. National culture is the identity of a nation. Music, Drawing and Manual Arts have a very important role to play in the development of the child.  Music provides for recreation, relaxation, and creativity of the human mind.  It enhances the child’s learning ability and the development of the mind.  Manual Arts encourages the development of professional skills from an early age.  Through the teaching of drawing children should think creatively and develop their imagination as well as appreciations of nature.
